The life of a student, over the years has taken a sea wave change, whether it pertains to the educational aspects, or the campus life itself, as such. Even the most average student can come out of the portals as a versatile professional, provided he or she makes use of the opportunities and exposure put forth to him or her, by the college. The campus life is getting trendier by the day, with the introduction of many cultural and social activities. So, this way, students are thrown open to the vast, ever demanding world at a young age. Such changes have also made the institutions to alter their ways of approach and execution.

Many of the colleges, having become autonomous, have started framing different set of regulations to be followed by the students. While some of these rules may restrict the liberty of a student as a youngster, they ultimately churn him out as a competent professional at the end of the course. However, the most debated topics of college life each year are the dress codes and the freedom of using mobile phones within the college campus.

Lets see how the perception of these two entities, differs between students and the institutions.

Dress Codes:

The take of the students on this:

Having worn uniforms for so many years, the students want to break free from the monotony and make use of their college life, to dress up according to their tastes and attitude (maintaining decency though). They feel that dressing up in the formal mode will anyway follow once they take up jobs and therefore, want the institutions to relax the rules and allow the students to be casual with regard to their attire.

The argument of the institutions:

Colleges are institutions where students from all strata of the society gain education. The managements want to bring about equality among the students, by means of the dress code concept, so that every student is treated equally and there are no discriminations against any student. Also, it is not just curriculum that the colleges teach, but much more than that, such as etiquette, professionalism etc. These things cannot be learnt overnight and have to be inculcated over a period of time. It is for these reasons, that dress codes become mandatory.

Cell phones:

Students say:

Times have changed. Even students have to build up a huge network in order to become competent. At this juncture, the cell phones have come as a boon for them to always stay connected. The students think that the phones can be switched to the silent mode during class hours and thereby, they can make judicious use of the gadget. Girl students even cite safety, as a reason behind the use of cell phones.

The stand of the institutions:

The use of cell phones destroys the serene atmosphere of the college. There are possibilities that this technology can be misused and also they are a potent source of distraction among the students. There have been thousands of students who have passed out colleges, without the necessity of phones within the campus. Cell phones are not inevitable for students, at least within the college campus.

The debate over these two topics is bound to continue for many years to come! Whether the college gives in to the demands of the students, or the students come to follow the rules without rebelling, is a matter that will take shape, according to the change in the perceptions of the two sides.
